Brand Marine Waterproof Binoculars
Contents
Binoculars is just one type of optics and selection of this type of optical instrument is huge. There are binoculars for each group of people.
Some binoculars can be used at home only while others have been created to use them in almost any environment. Cheap binoculars have a very limited usage.
Cheap binoculars are not waterproof or fog proof. But there is a specific class of binoculars known as marine binoculars. They are designed specifically for sea trips.
Marine binoculars are always waterproof and fog proof. We don’t need low quality optical instruments.
I’m going to show you only tested ones that will never disappoint you. Because your sea safety and orientation in the sea depend on the quality of marine binocular.
So, we need the best one.
Why use marine binoculars?
Marine binoculars are designed and used by different groups of people, such as sailors, military, yachtsmen, by those who travel on cruise ships or have their own yachts.
You can use marine binoculars in the most extremal conditions because they are designed specifically for such conditions.
Binoculars with high magnification power are not recommended because of their narrow field of view and causing hand shaking which results in unstable image.
Most marine binoculars have magnification 7x or 8x. Such binoculars have a wide angle of view, around 8 degrees or even 8.5 or 9 degrees and they are very lightweight which ensures image stability.
Image stability is very important especially in the sea because of the sea roll. For this purpose you can take advantage of image stabilization binoculars.
They provide an excellent image stability especially in the sea. But they are pretty expensive.
If you can afford it that would be a great investment in a great piece of optical instruments that you will use everywhere.
It will be a great optical instrument for marine purposes, terrestrial or even astronomical observations thanks to image stability.
But magnification 7x and 8x for marine binoculars is not the limit. You definitely can choose a more powerful binocular up to 15x to be able to use from hand.
If you need something even more powerful you can choose special binoculars with magnification up to 50x or even 100x for your yacht.
Such binoculars come with tripod. So, everything is possible. It mainly depends on your activity and intent of use.

Things to look for when choosing marine binocular
Porro vs roof prism
There are two types of marine binoculars, porro prism and roof prism. Mom binoculars are porro prism binoculars. Roof prism binoculars are less bulky.
Magnification
For river, lake or costal trips you don’t need super powerful marine binoculars. Magnification 7x or 8x will be enough.
Most of such binoculars have aperture 50mm so they can transmit more light which results in a brighter and clearer image.
For sea trips you better choose more powerful binocular with magnification 10x, 15x. Such binoculars have a gyroscope for image stabilization.
But they are more expensive.
Objective lens
When it comes to the size of objective lens for marine binoculars the optimal size would be 50mm which means it transmits more light and as a result you get bright and sharp image when looking through binoculars.
It’s even more important at night time. That’s why the most widespread binocular configuration is 7×50 or 8×50.
This means magnification 7x or 8x with objective lens of 50mm.
Water and fog proof
As I said, marine binoculars are protected from water or temperature difference.
There is a special standard to follow set by JIS- Japanese Industrial Standards.
According to this standard you can find out how well lenses are protected.
4 – Binocular is protected from splashing water but it’s not waterproof
5 – Binocular can withstand water jets
6 – Binoculars can be immersed in water for a short time
7 – Binocular can be immersed in water for 30 minutes at a depth of up to 100cm
8 – Completely waterproof binocular
If binoculars are filled with nitrogen it means binoculars will not fog up due to temperature changes.
So, fog proof optical instrument is well protected from such issues.
BTW, almost all marine binoculars have individual eyepiece focus in order to provide 100% waterproof safety for binoculars.
Lens coating
Since marine binoculars are suitable for all weather conditions they must have an excellent lens coating, preferably fully multi-coated lenses. This allows to transmit 97% of the light so you can get crystal clear and bright image even at night time.
Durability
Aside from being waterproof marine binoculars must be highly durable, shockproof and corrosion resistant. Also, all marine binoculars have a rubber armor that will help prevent you from dropping binoculars when wet.
Compass and rangefinder
All marine binoculars have illuminated digital compass for navigation and measuring distances.
Some binoculars even have goniometer / rangefinder scales to determine the distance, size, width and height of objects.
There are two types of rangefinders, with laser or reticle. Laser rangefinders are used in hunting binoculars and reticle in marine binoculars.
Field of view
As I said above, the optimal magnification for marine binoculars is 7x or 8x. Such binoculars are lightweight and you get stable image when looking through them.
Bulky binoculars cause way more hand shaking and unstable image as a result. Any binocular with magnification higher than 10x has a narrow field of view.
Just keep this in mind. If you need wide angle binoculars then choose magnification up to 10x.
If you need a powerful magnification, such as 12x and above that then you get optics with a narrow field of view.
Floating Strap
Floating strap is another thing that is highly recommended to use with your marine binocular.
In case you drop your binocular it will not sink in case if you have floating neck strap attached to it. They are not expensive. Some recommended straps:
- Steiner Floating Strap – $29.95
- Steiner Floating Strap – $27.71
- Eyeskey Universal Offshore Floating Strap – $14.99
- Levenhuk FS10 Floating Strap – $24.78
Can I look through binocular if I wear glasses?
There is some misunderstanding in this aspect. In fact, binocular is an optical instrument that can very well compensate and improve the image clarity for you even if you wear glasses.
This means you don’t need to wear glasses when you use your marine binocular.
But if you have astigmatism (common vision condition that causes blurred vision) then binocular can’t help and you have to look for binoculars that have at least 15mm eye relief.
Do I really need to buy marine binocular?
In fact, you don’t need it. You can choose any binocular 7×50 that is water and fog proof. If you don’t need compass or rangefinder your binocular will be even cheaper.
Binoculars with objective lens 50mm is highly recommended. Such binoculars may be a little bulky but they provide an excellent image quality and clarity.
