Brand vs Non Brand Binoculars
Contents
When you plan to buy a binocular like anyone you start doing research which is very normal.
We all do research when we want to buy something.
In our modern age market is full of different products and it’s really not easy to choose the right product.
It may seem easy at first but once you start researching the market you understand that it’s not easy at all.
When it comes to choosing binoculars they can be divided into two groups: brand and non brand binoculars.
In this article I will explain:
- Which group is the winner.
- How brand binoculars are different from non brand?
- Which binoculars to choose, brand or non brand?
And I hope I will be able to shed some light on this topic so you can make the right choice.
Brand binoculars
Of course, it’s not secret that brand products are always better than non brand.
It’s obvious by default. That’s why brand binoculars are almost always more expensive than non brand.
Because you pay for a brand which means you get a top quality product and guarantee that you get a product a company stands for.
There are many brands available on the market.
Brand binoculars are made of high quality materials, high quality optics, high quality prism and lens.
Brand binoculars manufactured by brand companies, such as Carson, Wingspan, Bushnell, Vortex, Bresser etc have years of experience in manufacturing of high quality optics.
One of the main aspects of high quality optics is level of lens coating.
Brand companies do it according to the highest quality standards. You get what you pay for.
Non brand binoculars
There are many non brand binoculars most of which are manufactured in China.
There are both good binoculars and low quality products.
Not all of them but many manufacturers don’t follow quality standards.
They don’t do lens coating as it needs to be done.
In the product description they claim their optical instruments have fully multi coating but in fact it’s not.
They claim diameter of lens 50mm but in fact it’s 45mm.
They claim their binocular has a field of view 4.5 degrees but in fact it’s 4 degrees.
The most widespread aspect of non brand binoculars is the magnification power of binoculars.
Very often in the description of non brand binocular it’s said its magnification power is for example 8x but in reality it’s 6x or 7x or even less powerful.
Or it is said magnification 15x but in fact it is 10x or 12x.
How then can you find out if your chosen binocular corresponds to its description? There are generally two ways:
- Going to a shop and testing out binoculars
- Look for Amazon customer reviews. It will help you a lot to find the best non brand binoculars.
- Read reviews on other blogs
Going to a shop is not always possible because it can be too far from you or maybe there are no optical shops in your area.
That’s why looking for customer reviews or reading reviews can be a good solution.
For example, there are some non brand binoculars on Amazon and they have very good ratings.
There are not many of them. Most are made of low quality materials and produce low quality image.
I have some binoculars on my “recommended binoculars” page.
I have listed brand binoculars.

How are brand binoculars different from non brand?
Generally speaking brand binoculars manufactured by optical brand companies are made of high quality materials and using precision optical equipment and you can hardly find any defect in brand binoculars.
What you find in the description of branded binoculars 100% corresponds to their real quality.
Non brand binoculars very often come without any guarantee.
For example, the quality of BAK-4 prism used in most binoculars may not be of the same quality when it comes to brand or non brand binoculars.
The same applies to lens coatings which is highly important for the image quality produced by binoculars.
When you choose brand binoculars you know exactly what you pay for.
When you choose non brand you have to rely only on customer or product reviews.
Which binoculars to choose, brand or non brand?
Generally speaking, the best buck you spent is for brand products.
As I said, not all Chinese products are bad. There are good ones too.
The only difference is that when you choose brand binoculars you get 100% high quality optical instrument.
When you choose non brand you have to spend hours to read reviews on other blogs to find out if your chosen product is exactly what you pay for.
Plus brand binoculars come with a guarantee which is an important and positive aspect.
If you can spend around $100 then I recommend to choose brand binoculars.
If you are on a tight budget then choose from my recommended page.
There are some binoculars under $100 and the quality is good. I hope my article was helpful.
If you still unsure and not sure what to choose let me know and I will help you to find a good set of binocular depending on your budget.
Dear Adam, many thanks for this article. Very instructive. I surely know now what to do in terms of choosing and buying binoculars.
I recently went to the Opera and as I am short-sighted, I missed binoculars in order to have a proper view on the actors. Your study is very thorough and you have reviewed a lot of products, that is very helping. Take care. Purdey
Hi Purdey. BTW, you can read my recent post about compact binoculars and find the right one for you.
Hi Adam
Thanks a lot for sharing this post on brand vs non brand binoculars. I have a non brand binocular which I used when I go camping or sightseeing with my friends.
It is just like you said, the quality is low standard and can’t stand for my rough activity. I’m going to check out your list of brand binoculars and might get a new one from the list to replace my old one.
I bookmarked this page for future reference. Thanks a lot for taking your time and put all these together.
Thanks
Samm
I’m glad you find my research helpful. Very few non brand optical instruments stand the quality standards. I always prefer brand ones. Even when you hold in your hand a brand binocular you feel the difference right away. If you need any help let me know and I will be happy to help you choose the right one.
