The Ultimate List of Wide Field of View Binoculars
This topic is very interesting in certain groups and I want to talk a little about wide field of view binoculars and show the best of them so anyone can choose the best optical instrument for their activity.
I will show both standard size and compact wide angle binoculars. It’s no a secret that we buy binoculars because of their magnification power.
But field of view or angle of view is important too. Before manufacturers couldn’t achieve both criteria.
Over time technology has improved and now manufacturers of optics can produce binoculars that can fit requirements of almost all groups of people.
If you need a powerful binocular there are manufacturers that are specialized in power optics. If you need wide angle binocular you can get it at an affordable price.
But you must keep in mind that wide angle binoculars are a little more expansive than standard binoculars.
Because in order to manufacture a binocular with a wide angle of view and that has a powerful magnification manufacturers use advanced technologies.
Why wide angle binoculars?
I have an article about field of view here. If you want to understand better how it works you can read it.
In general, angle of view depends on magnification power of a binocular. The higher the magnification the narrower the field of view.
That’s why depending on where you plan to use binoculars you must keep in mind one simple thing.
If magnification power is your main priority you know what to do. If you need a powerful binocular and still have a wide angle of view then magnification 12x is your limit.
Anything more powerful than 12x has a narrow field of view. Again, magnification power 12x is not recommended if you look for a wide angle binocular.
I just want to explain that IF magnification power and angle of view is super important aspect for you then magnification 12x is the limit.
But binoculars with magnification 12x have angle of view 4.7 degrees (246 feet/1000yds).
I would recommend choosing magnification 8x or 10x. Such binoculars can have angle of view up to 18 degrees:
- 6.3 degrees – 330 feet / 1000 yds
- 6.8 degrees – 357 feet / 1000 yds
- 7 degrees – 367 feet / 1000 yds
- 7.5 degrees – 393 feet / 1000 yds
- 8 degrees – 420 Ft/1000 Yds
- 8.1 degrees – 425 Ft/1000 Yds
- 8.2 degrees – 430 Ft/1000 Yds
Some binoculars with magnification 4x have super wide field of view. These binoculars are not super powerful but angle of view is fantastic.
Angle of view can be up to:
- 17 degrees- 900 feet @ 1000yds
- 18 degrees- 945 feet @ 1000yds
Useful TIP: Wide angle binoculars show you wider image which makes finding objects much easier, especially for hunters and bird watchers because they mainly observe moving objects. For human eyes looking through a wide field of binocular is way more interesting and fund than through a narrow angle binocular.

Below you can see the conversion table for binoculars. BTW, some manufacturers indicate binocular specifications in degrees while others in feets/yds.
Here is an online calculator for you. Or to make it easier for you I add the conversion table here.
If a manufacturer indicates field of view in degrees you don’t need to calculate anything. Wide field of view binocular starts from 6.3 degrees and up to 18 degrees.
If manufacturer indicates in Ft/1000 Yds then you need to make some calculations to know the field of view.
For example, if we have 110 ft/1000yds you need to divide 110 by 52.5 and get the actual field of view. 110 divided by 52.5 = 2.1 degrees.
The rest can be calculated according to the table. In fact, you don’t even need to make calculations.
Just find the respective number in ft and see how much is the field of view next to it in degrees.
ft/1000yds
- 110 = 2.1° TFOV (ft divided by 52.5)
- 120 = 2.3°
- 130 = 2.5°
- 140 = 2.7°
- 150 = 2.9°
- 160 = 3.0°
- 170 = 3.2°
- 180 = 3.4°
- 190 = 3.6°
- 200 = 3.8°
- 210 = 4.0°
- 220 = 4.2°
- 230 = 4.4°
- 240 = 4.6°
- 250 = 4.8°
- 260 = 5.0°
- 270 = 5.2°
- 280 = 5.4°
- 290 = 5.5°
- 300 = 5.7°
- 310 = 5.9°
- 320 = 6.1°
- 330 = 6.3°
- 340 = 6.5°
- 350 = 6.7°
- 360 = 6.9°
- 370 = 7.0°
- 380 = 7.2°
- 390 = 7.4°
- 400 = 7.6°
- 410 = 7.8°
- 420 = 8.0°
- 430 = 8.2°
- 440 = 8.4°
- 450 = 8.6°
- 460 = 8.8°
- 470 = 9.0°
- 480 = 9.1°
- 490 = 9.3°
- 500 = 9.5°
- 510 = 9.7°
- 520 = 9.9°
- 530 = 10.1°
- 540 = 10.3°
- 550 = 10.5°
- 560 = 10.7°
- 570 = 10.9°
- 580 = 11.0°
- 590 = 11.2°
- 600 = 11.4°
- 650 = 12.3°
- 700 = 13.3°
- 750 = 14.2°

- 850 = 16.1°
- 900 = 17.1°
- 950 = 18°
- 1000 = 19°
If Ft is represented in meters then you do it as follows:
m/1000m
- 35 = 2.0° TFOV (m divided by 17.5)
- 38 = 2.2°
- 41 = 2.4°
- 44 = 2.5°
- 47 = 2.7°
- 50 = 2.9°
- 53 = 3.0°
Wide field of view binoculars
As I said, binoculars that have a reasonable magnification power and wide angle of view are those with magnification up to 8x.
This is an ideal choice suitable almost for everyone.
If you feel 8x is not enough for you then choose magnification 10x. I wouldn’t recommend going beyond 10x. To see the difference between 10x and 12x see the screenshot below.
Though binoculars with magnification power 8x and 10x have a wide field of view some binoculars have even wider filed of view thanks to using some advanced technologies by brands, such as Steiner, Wingspan, Vortex, Swarovski, Leica and some others.
Such binoculars are more expensive than standard binoculars.
I believe standard binoculars with magnification up to 10x have a good angle of view suitable for most users.
If you need such binoculars you can find them here according to magnification power.
In this article I will show only binoculars with extra wide field of view that are different from standard binoculars.
Almost all of them have BAK-4 prism, full multi-layer coating with 99% light transmission to ensure the highest image quality.
But you must keeping mind that extra wide field of view affects the price of a binocular.
If you can’t afford it then your ideal choice would be choosing a standard binocular with magnification up to 10x.
Useful TIP: Binocular’s field of view primarily depends on eyepiece design (exit pupil), not on the size of the binocular. Smaller binocular can have wider field of view than a big binocular. It also depends on the magnification power. Lower powered binocular always has wider field of view.

This is the best I have ever found on the subject of FOV or Field of View. Excellent article! Great because it included reviews, prices, and I trust it when this article says it is BAK4, then it is. Many places make claims, but you don’t know if you can trust them. For some reason, I think the author did his homework. Thx for your hard work and time this took!!
Thank you very much Chris for the comment and kind words. I really put a lot of work into it and continue working on the site. I hope some day more people will come to my site and like you find what they have been looking for and will appreciate my effort.
actual field of view is a product of the apparent field of view of the ocular divided by the magnification power of the binocular. What I find more important is the “apparent” field of view in a binocular, which is determined directly from the design of the oculars (the lens sets near the eye). You can 3º “field of view”, however with a good wide field ocular, it will appear as 90-100º to the eye, which yields a picture window appearance, as opposed to a view of looking down 2 – pipes with each yielding a 3 degree view. There are ultra wide field oculars on the market for telescopes than can easily run into the $100-300/pc, and they can get fairly large in diameter. however I have found some older binoculars with liberal apparent fields of view, however they are generally of the lower cost 35mm and lower objective diameter.
